Robert L. West was born in North Platt, ND in 1925 and grew up in Fort Collins, Colo. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1944-1946. While a student in economics at Yale University he was elected national Vice-President, International Affairs of the U.S. National Student Association (NSA) during 1948 and 1949.

In this keepsake is an excerpt from an address he delivered in August, 1950, at the Second World Student Congress of the International Union of Students (IUS) in Prague, Czechoslovakia, as spokesman for an observer delegation sent by the NSA. The event took place shortly after the outbreak of the Korean War. Czechoslovakia had succumbed to a Communist coup two years earlier. Dominated by delegations hostile to America's entry into the war, West faced a difficult challenge in getting his message across to the thousands of delegates who filled the meeting hall. That message, "the unity of all the students of the world within a progressive and democratic international union of students," was rebuffed. The excerpt from that speech that appears here is taken from the anthology and sourcebook, American Students Organize. Founding the National Student Association After World War II (American Council on Education/Praeger. 2006).

Design template: This Monograph Genre cover design is in the Classic Mood and uses a simulated pebbled leather background. A number of different background color choices are offered. The design uses a diamond-shaped ornamental border that is repeated in the interior pages. Jensen Pro, a contemporary treatment of a classic face, sets the tone for the template used for this book.
