3 S LAVERY : A MER I CA S F ATAL C OMPROMI SE

Preface

This article was first published in Persuasion, a political newsletter that Ms. Taylor edited in the mid 1960’s.

The magazine dealt with political issues of the day, primarily the Vietnam War and the draft, from what would now be called a “libertarian” point of view. Both Joan and her husband David Dawson were students of Ayn Rand’s objectivism, and they carried her philosophical committment to laissez faire capitalism into the trenches of political advocacy. David, in particular, campaigned vigorously against the draft in many forums, and wrote many articles on the subject for Persuasion.

Persuasion was the only magazine Ayn Rand ever endorsed. Its subscription max’ed out at about 1000 readers per month, and the newsletter was mimeographed, folded, and mailed out by hand from the offices of Persuasion, Inc., shared with Dawson Designs, on West 86 th Street in New York City.

This article is a lovely example of Joan’s approach — historically informative, intellectually rigorous, illuminating and thought provoking.
