was 19, working construction in the summer time, earning money for my sophomore year at college. Tere wasn’t much work in Northern Michigan in the summer but I got a job with the City of Alpena, repairing sidewalks and streets, learning how to operate a #2 shovel when there was work to be done and how to look busy when there wasn’t. Most of the time we had to work pretty hard as labor was cheap-er than equipment.

College was Michigan Tech in Sault Ste. Marie, about 175 miles away. Getting up there and back was always a hassle so I decided to buy a car if I could fnd a decent one for under $200. A new car could be had for about $2000 so $200 would get you something that would run but it wouldn’t be too fancy.
