He has served as a production executive for Monarch Press, Random House, CRM/ Psychology Today and Goodyear/Prentice Hall: After completing graduate course work in public administration at NYU in 1953, he worked as a union organizer and was in the printing business. He holds a B.S. in civil engineering from the City College of New York .

His Parents, Edward Schwartz, a grocery worker, and Bella Dovbish, a garment worker, emigrated from Ukraine before the Russian Revolution and met in New York City. His late sister, Ruth Snyder, came from his mother’s first marriage and his brother Sholom Schwartz from his father’s second. Gene married the late Betty Freedman, with whom he has a son, Joseph, and a daughter, Alexandra. And, in turn, three grandchildren: Ben (Joe and Allison), and Willa and Layla (Alex and Larry). His second wife was Caroline Epstein. He was divorced twice.

Ruth Snyder had two daughters, Sharon [Weatherlake] and Dianne [Hulscher], who became Gene’s life-long extended family. From Sharon, a grand nephew, Samuel. From
