Red Friday, yes. Who else but the godless Russians would have perpetrated such a devilish plot. Too cowardly to face us in open warfare, with either conventional or nuclear arms despite our taunts and challenges, they struck us below the belt, the money belt where we were most vulnerable. All their previous sins, which were well publicized, such as the invasion of Afghanistan and giving arms to revolutionary governments, were as nothing to this “crime of the century” as the New York Times aptly designated it in their august columns.. When one of our past Presidents had termed the Soviet Union an “evil empire”, some people scoffed at him but we know now that he spoke with brilliant foresight.

Even the coding of the missive was too deceptive for our radio detectors. Tere was a beguiling simplicity in its wording. However at the moment it blasted through our air waves I sensed its sinister intent,

“Te Praesidium of the Soviet Socialist Republics wish to announce to the world its decision to disarm unilaterally, both nuclear and convent iona l weapons. Inspect ion open.”
