How Goals Can Suddenly Appear
When I was about 19 years old I wrote on my list of goals that I wanted a
black belt in karate. When I was 23, it appeared. I was working in a gov-
ernment office where I met an older guy. He was impressive, and when he
walked away someone mentioned that he was a fourth degree black belt. It
turned out that my university offered a free class for students and alumni.
So I took karate for eight years, four or more nights a week, at no cost ex-
cept for advancement tests. There was nothing that was going to stop me.
During the first six months, I swore, every night, that if I finished the
class I would never return. It was the hardest exercise I’d ever done in my
life. It was miserable, and I wanted to quit, but I couldn’t. Somehow, each
night I would be back in class swearing I would never return. Finally, after
about six months, I began to enjoy the class. I look back now and I know
that all I just said is true because I wrote it down; it had a life of its own.
Write down more about what you want to do with your life. Don’t
stop with age 20 or 25. What about age 30, 50, 70, 90? Include things
like running a marathon or winning a Nobel Prize, or becoming an as-
tronaut, or starting a business.
Dream Big!
Don’t be afraid of your
dreams; write down what you want. Your current circumstances are
irrelevant. Where you are today does not determine where you will be
tomorrow. What determines your tomorrow is what you THINK about
today.
