THE NEW FAMILY: MAPPING YOUR WAY TO THE GOOD
STUFF! was originally published online in 2000 and has been in continual
use as a textbook in my classes on Marriage and Family in the Sociology
Department at Monterey Peninsula Junior College, MPC, where I serve
on the adjunct faculty.
I wrote this book because in my work as a marriage and family therapist
I spend a lot of time repeating the same information to every new client
who walks through my door. Since this is the educational aspect of the
therapy I do I thought, “Why not present the material as the curriculum
in a course of study? If I put it in book form and take some of the
mystique out of psychotherapy, it could help jump start a lot of people
into making changes on their own.”
Q: Why do we need The Peace-Centered Relationship
Model Map® and a new tool called “mapping” that is
focused on health?
A: The mental health system is broken. It originally grew
out of a medical model that is focused on pathology, the
diagnosing and treating of symptoms. As a result it does not
adequately address the everyday needs of couples, children,
and families who often need help through normal life cycles,
loss, expected and unexpected transitions, illness, and crisis.
The other problem is the insurance system in the United
States; it is too expensive and restrictive to serve the broad
needs of family life.
It no longer makes sense to try and fix a mental health
system that is dysfunctional. What if we took a new view of
the problem and adopted an educational approach that
teaches us how to build sound, healthy relationships and
maintain them? What if we used The Peace-Centered
Relationship Map as a paradigm that works both as a
remedial tool in psychotherapy and as a preventive, wellness
model for mental health?
