I would like to acknowledge the many instructional and peer coaches, teachers, principals, and admin-istrators who have assisted in the development of the “backwards planning” concept. Their efforts have escalated into many arenas, and it is hoped that this book will serve as the foundation for a village of educators to enhance their teaching by further embracing a focus on student learning. And speaking of a village, we’ve all heard the phrase “It takes a village . . .” Creating this book is no exception. We too have a team of dedicated professionals, each member of which used his or her area of expertise to ensure a quality finished product.

Terri Bianco not only bore with my concepts and my often complex look at things, she also translated them into written words that both syn-thesized and fully explained the process and its intent. As Project Manager of this book, Terri worked closely with Production Editor Barbara Brown, who managed the myriad details of the publishing process.
