I Remember When
brothers called him
Paul
and his children called him
D.P
.
(behind his back). Mother was named
Winifred
but her
sisters-in-law called her
Sophi
e, while her brother called
her
Fred a
nd everyone else called her
Winnie. M
y sister’s
birth certificate said
Barbara Ann,
but she was most often
called
Bob
, or
Bobby
. My brother was named
Daniel Paul
J
r., but was better known as
Buddy.
Some aunts still call
him
Sonny
, although he also is known as
Junior.
When he
went away to college, he became
Dan
.
I was the unfortunate child with a really weird
name,
Ina Von
. I was called
Von
at
home and
Ina Von
at school.
It is something of a mystery how that name
came about. I was told that when I “came along” it was
D.P.’s turn to name the baby. Everyone always said ba-
bies “came along” as if they had been strolling along
the street looking for a place to stay and decided on a
likely house. Anyway, when I
came along
, D.P. had been
reading about a beautiful aristocrat from Germany who
was visiting Winston-Salem and who was written up
in the newspapers and much photographed. Her name
was
Katerina von
(some German name). So D.P. took the
parts of the name he liked and left out the rest. He liked
the
Ina von
part. Often I was placed in
the V’s;
by care-
ful alphabetizers
,
Once, when I received a certificate of
merit and my name was printed as
Amazon Menace. D.P.
thought it was most amusing
.
“How did they know?” he
asked, laughing at me.
